Walmart Foundation Grants $50,000 To Golden Corner Food Pantry

The Walmart Foundation's State Giving Program grants $50,000 support to the Golden Corner Food Pantry to help improve the nutritional emergency in the country of Oconee, South Carolina, Greenville Online reports.

Steve Finger, chairman of the Golden Corner Food Pantry said, "We are especially grateful for Walmart Foundation's generosity. This grant will allow us to proceed with our Improved Nutrition Program for another year, providing fresh milk, whole grain cereal and other nutrition items beyond donated food."

In 2014, about 1.6 million pounds of food have been distributed by the non- profit organization, Golden Corner Food Pantry to more than 1,600 families per month including seniors' estimated 600 heads.

Finger said, "Over half of Food Pantry clients are family households, many with small children, and these nutritional items are especially important for their well-being. The Walmart Foundation's generosity will help us provide sufficient and balanced food to the less fortunate of Oconee County."

Brooke Mueller, who is the director of public affairs for Walmart, said, "The Walmart Foundation is excited to support the Golden Corner Food Pantry. "Through this grant, we can help provide nutritional food for those in need."

In 2014, community giving in South Carolina from Walmart stores, clubs and the Walmart Foundation totaled $31.9 million, according to Golden Corner Food Pantry website.

It is also stated in their site "Improved Nutrition" "program we work hard to make sure our clients get nutritional food. We've stopped buying 'junk food' no matter how cheap it is. We raised extra funds to buy fresh milk, whole grain cereal, and extra eggs, cheese & meat for clients."

They also added that when they have insufficient donations, they buy essential food.

"And when donations do not provide enough key staples (like canned vegetables, fruit, rice, pasta, etc.) we buy them, so that our clients ALWAYS have these essentials."
