Gas Vs. Coal Grilling

Tis' the season for kebabs, burgers, brisket, steak, and franks, so many folks are looking for their next gas grill purchase. Some purists turn their noses up at gas grills, preferring coal or wood-pellet grills. Others are die-hard smoker fans who enjoy the results of long, slow cooking. But gas grills have some serious benefits that include precise temperature control, even heat distribution, no ashes for easy cleanup, and finally, their emissions are far lower than other BBQ methods so you can feel good about going smokeless.

The Weber Spirit II E-210 Grill is small but mighty. The unit clocks in at 48 x 27 x 44.5 inches with a cooking area of 450 square inches. It also comes on a handy rollable cart so you can wheel it into the garage or the shed when you're done with your franks. It comes with two burners and what Weber calls "flavorizer" bars that turn food driblets and juices into a deliciously flavor-enhancing vapor. It has enough hooks for all your favorite grilling tools and the propane tank attached to the cart, so it's all self-contained. Temperature controls and fuel gauges are easy to find and operate, and if you are still cramped for space, one side of the cooking area folds down to take up less patio space.

This little workhorse comes in cranking out 30,000 BTU, is space-friendly, and gets top marks from online buyers. It's got a bunch of bells and whistles for your buck including a stainless steel control panel with chromium plating control knobs, a faster starting piezoelectric ignition system (easier to start your grill with than the ones we grew up with that took forever), and a built-in thermometer and it's only $199.00 this week on Amazon.

So you say you don't even have a yard? Or a porch? Don't fret. You don't have to be left out of the gas-grilling club. For us urban dwellers who only have tiny spaces to scorch some skewers, Cuisinart comes to the plate with this adorable little fella. It's cheap (only $114.00 on Amazon), light, easy to clean, and takes up about as much space as a big bread box. The grill is a modest 12 inches by 18 inches and comes on retractable legs, so you can put it pretty much anywhere. You do need to keep an eye out for the occasional grease flare, but it's not like it's churning out major BTU's so with some caution, you probably won't singe your eyebrows off. This one travels well, so it's great for tailgating, beach BBQs, and camping, but in the case of the latter, we stress keeping safety first. We don't want Smokey the Bear  paying us a visit post-trip.

We love this one because it just looks so dang cool. It looks less like a grill and more like one to the evil Dalek robots from the old Dr. Who TV show. The unit was designed by Robert Brunner, the former chief of design at Apple and designer of Beats by Dre headphones, so cool aesthetics run in its DNA. Beyond its ominous retro-futuristic appearance, this unit has some impressive perks. For one thing, despite its appearance, it can hold a lot of food since the 346 square inch circular grill top. It can also go from 0 to 500 degrees in roughly 5 minutes, so you won't have to wait forever to get your sear on. There's a thermometer built into the grill so you can keep an eye on chop temps and an extra elevated grill space to place food on that you want warm but not dried out.
