Robin Williams' Wife Recounts The Actor's Suffering Before His Death

Susan Williams recounted everything to The Times about Robin Williams' final days.

Robin Williams' widow revealed that the actor was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, three months before his death. An expert told them that with the right treatment, he would still live for another 10 years. But at that time he was already suffering the symptoms including heartburn, stomach pain, anxiety and insomnia that began in 2013.

The actor invariably suffered the symptoms of the disease, but it was unbearable at night. Every time the pain woke Robin up, he would be "ready to talk." Susan said, "Usually, he would be looping on a delusional fear or paranoia that he couldn't shake, and we would talk it through."

Susan said Robin's inability to sleep and the anxiety began attacking him just months before he passed away. He began getting mad at himself for the "uncontrollable fears and paranoia that were ravaging him, like walking into a room and just freezing."

She further revealed, "He was sick of being unable to talk or move for moments on end sometimes. In times of clarity, he would tell me how he couldn't bust out of the prison of his delusional thinking. His brain was attacking him."

In August 2014, the world was shocked after news broke out that he was found dead in his home. Susan said before his death she didn't notice anything different about her husband. She later found out that "Robin was still looping with delusional fears and paranoia throughout that weekend, but was no longer sharing this anguish with me," she said he kept everything from her. Instead he made secret conversations through phone calls with other people and "insulating me from his mental trauma."

After Robin William's death, Susan also found out that weeks before he passed away, he was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia. An expert explained to her that it was, "as if he had cancer throughout every organ in his body."
