The American dystopian science fiction - The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials surpassed the American crime film - Black Mass of Johnny Depp at the box office. Both films cut young and old moviegoers in half on the first weekend of the fall movie season. With 63% of the former's audience below 25 years old while 89% of the latter's being above 25.
As stated in studio estimates, the sequel to 20th Century Fox's The Maze Runner earned a robust $43.3 million from 66 markets. The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials conquered the top spot in 30 of those territories. The film's muscular start was ushered in by healthy debuts in South Korea, where it collected $7.5 million, Russia with $3.8 million, Brazil with $2.7 million and Venezuela with $2.5 million.
On the other hand, Warner Bros.' Black Mass, with Johnny Depp playing the Boston gangster Whitey Bulger, premiered with $23.4 million. That's a strong sum, considering the film is an R-rated adult drama, but, it hammers down the conclusion of a bad box-office run for Johnny Depp following "Mortdecai," ''Transcendence" and "The Lone Ranger."
So far, The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials film got in a return of $108.3 million globally. And as it debuted in the U.S. on Friday, the movie went up on its domestic release by bowing in several territories last weekend.
Twentieth Century Fox is in charge of distributing The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials film, which costs $61 million to produce. The motion picture focuses on a group of teenagers planning and directing the route of a deadly post-apocalyptic world.
Universal Studios' 3D biographical disaster drama and adventure thriller film - 'Everest,' got the second spot in the box office with $28.2 million across 36 international territories, and the film's worldwide total of $35.8 million.
Director Baltasar Kormákur's Everest, debuted this weekend in North America that featured a special Imax and premium large format run, and from 545 locations, the Everest film earned a sizable $7.6 million.
