Rumors Say Witcher 3 Developer CD Projekt Red May Be Acquired By EA

Could Polish game developers CD Projekt Red be the latest studio to be acquired by Electronic Arts? The rumors began when DSOGaming published an article citing a source within the company who claims that EA executives were visiting to discuss a possible takeover.

"I'm employee of CD Projekt Red and I have some bad news to share with you. Our management is probably talking with Electronic Arts about potential takeover."

He doesn't mince words, saying out front that the only reason EA would be in town is to discuss a possible acquisition:

"Electronic Arts representatives are currently visiting our studio and meeting with top management. We are not going to release any game soon, so for sure it's not about any publishing deal, so the only possible reason for EA guys being here is that they want to buy us."

This rumor was quickly shot down on Twitter by Marcin Iwinski, one of the studio's co-founders.

It would be no surprise if EA were interested in buying CDPR however. The company is one of the hottest in the industry thanks to the sterling critical and commercial reception of its latest game the fantasy role-playing epic The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. The game received rave reviews when it launched back in May and has already sold over 6 million copies worldwide, an impressive feat for an independent studio.

Aside from this, CDPR also has a thriving digital distribution platform called GOG.

EA has a long and often controversial history of acquiring big name studios only to shut them years later. Some of their notable buys include Command and Conquer developer Westwood, Sims creators Maxis, and Canadian RPG maestros Bioware.
