When the American heavy metal band Metallica, unleashed their self-funded movie, the 2013 American IMAX thriller concert film - 'Through The Never,' it stimulated the interest of Metallica's fans, only to leave them perplexed and confused by its plot, which is extremely complex and difficult to follow. The 'Through The Never' film was such a commercial failure that the members of the Metallica band lost millions of their own money.
In an interview with the Metallica's fan club magazine, the co-founder, lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist of Metallica - James Hetfield, has since opened up about the film's flop.
Metallica's frontman James Hetfield expanded on the concept of the film that left many moviegoers baffled as to what exactly they were watching, "It's bittersweet, the whole movie bit. We put a lot of money, time and effort into it, and how awesome we thought it was, and how 'wow, this is pretty unique' we felt about it, at the end of the day, it was a downfall."
James Hetfield also said, "It was not so much a concert film, not so much an action drama, it was somewhere in the middle; it just fell right down the crevasse. It disappeared. And it was sad to see that."
Metallica's 'Through The Never' film cost the band members $20 million out of their own pockets. Reportedly, there were not any outside investors to fund the movie, it was 100% funded by the band members themselves. After the film grossed only $3.4 million, the band was struck by a huge financial loss.
James Hetfield stated that it was the time when he was so pissed, and the singer said that it was stupid.
However, the heavy metal band Metallica is currently busy with recording new songs for their upcoming album that is slated to be released in 2016, or early 2017 at the latest.
