Director Joe Wright's British-American-Australian 3D fantasy adventure family film - Pan, sunk to the bottom this weekend, as the movie earned a drab $20.5 million overseas while debuting in 52 markets.
That number of the Pan film represents over 40% of the international marketplace and spells trouble for the American entertainment company - Warner Bros. (the studio behind the $150 million project). Pan should have made at least $400 million in order to turn a profit - but it turns out, the flick has only managed to hit $40.6 million globally.
Hugh Jackman's Pan film flopped domestically, as it only picked up $15.5 million. In terms of the film's reception overseas, Mexico and Russia's audiences were the most enthusiastic, but it only delivered $2.7 million and $2.1 million, respectively. However, the film has yet face the most crucial gauge of it's performance as it hits China's theaters on October 22. Being the world's second largest film market, China can alleviate the blow done by the U.S. moviegoers' rejection.
While the fantasy adventure family film - Pan, failed to generate much heat, director Ridley Scott's American science fiction film - 'The Martian' topped foreign charts for the second consecutive weekend, as the film earned $58.1 million from 12,795 screens in 74 international markets.
The film, starring Matt Damon, is about an astronaut that was left without the means to move from somewhere, scored Twentieth Century Fox's biggest opening weekend in South Korea with $12.7 million.
'The Martian' also opened in first place in Russia that collected $7.2 million and topped the United Kingdom's charts with $6.2 million. "The Martian" has gained $227.7 million worldwide, and the film is in a good position to make a healthy return on its $108 million production budget.
However, second place at the box office went to the time travel comedy film - Goodbye Mr. Loser, with "Pan" nabbing fifth place - the third and fourth slots went to the fantasy-comedy film "Hotel Transylvania 2" and the comedy-drama adventure film "Inside Out."
