Many people desires for a good eyesight and a healthy body. On the contrary, a woman from North Carolina purposely blinded herself and claimed that she is now more contented with her life after fulfilling her dream to become blind.
Jewel Shuping is recently drawing the interest of the media because of her unbelievable story. In her testimony, she said that she poured a drain cleaner in her eyes because of her belief that she was born blind.
The 30-year-old woman was born with a perfect eyesight. However, in her statement to Barcroft TV, Shuping said that ever since before, she knew that she wants to be blind and the idea itself makes her happy.
"By the time I was six I remember that thinking about being blind made me feel comfortable," Shuping said.
At an early age, she already daydreamt of becoming visionless. She would spent long periods of time staring directly to the sun despite of the consistent warning of her mother. She also pretended to be blind by wearing sunglasses and by using a cane for direction-finding.
At the age of 21, the desire of being blind had elevated according to her. By the help of a psychologist, a drain cleaner was poured out in her eyes. During the few weeks, she said that her eyes can still see the TV screen but after six months, her eyesight finally surrendered due to the damage of the drain cleaner.
In her statement she said that she has no regrets of her decision.
"I really feel this is the way I was supposed to be born, that I should have been blind from birth," Shuping told Barcroft TV.
According to her, she was diagnosed with Body Integrity Identity Disorder (BIID). The said disorder which was discovered by Dr. Michae First is a person's desire to be disabled. The affected patients feel envy to the people who have certain disabilities that they wish to have.
