In New York, the golden retriever that saved his blind owner is finally done with surgery and is on its way to recovery. Audrey Stone's pet ran towards a mini school bus to shoulder most of the impact in an accident that almost killed them both.
The Journal News reported that on Monday morning, a Brewster school bus was carrying a couple of kindergarten students to St. Lawrence O'Toole Childhood Center when it ran through 62-year-old Stone and her dog, who are crossing the unpainted pedestrian lane at Michael Neuner Drive.
Witnesses say that Stone's pet, which was trained to guide the visually-impaired woman saved her from death.
Chief of Brewster Police, John Del Gardo told ABC that the "hero dog" lunged at the bus. It injured his leg and paw, and the woman received multiple injuries.
Del Gardo also said that "the dog took a lot of the blow and he did not want to leave her side. He stood right with her. He was there to save her."
"Figo" suffers a leg injury after risking his life for his old-aged owner.
Xtra Mart gas station manager, Paul Schwarts witnessed the accident and ran for help. He told that the dog, who heard was named 'Bigo' was really concerned with his owner until the medical team took her away in an ambulance.
"He was flopping over to her and she didn't want him to get away from her, either. She kept screaming, 'Where's Bigo? Where's Bigo? Where's Bigo?' We kept telling her he was fine."
The North Main Street resident has three fractured ribs, a broken elbow and ankle. She is currently under treatment at Danbury Hospital.
Figo got his leg splinted at Middlebranch Veterinary. One staff told The Journal News that they will take care of the protective pet until Stone has finally recovered and is ready to take him home.
