Although mistakenly reported as an iPhone 5-only issue among many news outlets, the underdeveloped and slightly broken Apple Maps application that replaced Google Maps on all iOS 6 devices received an apology Friday, from the head honcho at Apple, CEO Tim Cook.
Apple, which is well known for setting its standards a notch above the competition, admits that they made a mistake launching the new Maps application.
In a letter posted on Apple's website, Cook writes that the company, "strive to make world-class products that deliver the best experience possible." He continued, "With the launch of our new Maps last week, we fell short on this commitment. We are extremely sorry of the frustration this has caused our customers and we are doing everything we can to make Maps better. "
The number of devices that uses the new Apple Maps already number over 100 million, according to Cook's letter.
He also suggested that users may want to use alternatives while Apple tries to improve their newborn Map app, recommending users to download apps like Bing, MapQuest and Waze.
Cook did not mention a word however, as to why the company left Google clueless about being excluded from the new iPhone. Not even allowing Google to put their Google Map app from previous iOS devices for download on the Apple App Store.
At the very least, it is refreshing to see a Chief Executive, of one of the largest companies in the world, coming out with a personal apology on behalf of his company for not coming through on their commitment.
When it concerns over 100 million users, it might not be surprising. On a highly competitive market, the threat of losing customers to competitors is ever present.
