As the release of the new iPhone draws closer, Apple is starting to push a new software update for the device that features, among other things, a replacement for Google maps, and better integration with Facebook.
The new update will be supported on the iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad 2, the new iPad, as well as fourth generation iPod touch, reports the ClarionLedger.
First-hand reports indicate that the new software is attractive but suffers from holes and glitches, according to the New York Times.
The move does not come completely unexpected as Google, the company behind Google maps, has become more of a competitor to Apple, than a partner as it was previously.
Among the new features in the map application is a more sophisticated navigation system with spoken turn-by-turn directions, as well as a completely new top-down view called Flyover, which allows the user to navigate a map populated by detailed 3D models of buildings in major cities.
For the first time in Apple history, the download can be done wirelessly without plugging the device in a computer, as long as your current device is running iOS 5.
