Two weeks ago, The Hollywood Reporter published an article announcing that Kate Beckinsale had agreed to reprise her role as the vampire Selene in the fifth installment of the Action Horror franchise Underworld which is still untitled. Now other outlets have begun to report that a reunion between Beckinsale and the franchise is in fact happening. The VCpost, mentions that the move came as a surprise, as Variety reported last year that Beckinsale would not return to the role she has played three times.
Beckinsale appeared in the franchise's debut 2003 Underworld, and its ensuing sequel Underworld: Evolution. The 41 year old actress was not present in the Franchise's third outing, the prequel/reboot Underworld: Rise of the Lycans. She made her return to the series in 2012's Underworld Awakening.
Beckinsale will be joined by British actor Theo James, who previously had a small role as the character David in Awakening. James is best known to movie goers for his role opposite Shailene Woodley in the young adult dystopian franchise Divergent. Underworld 5 is said to focus on a new generation of Vampires and Lycans as they continue to fight in the eternal struggle between the two warring factions.
The film will be directed Anna Foerster. Which marks the first time a woman will sit in the director's chair for the franchise. Her previous credits as director of photography include movies such as "The Day After Tomorrow" and "White House Down." Foerster also directed several episodes for Starz's supernatural TV drama series "Outlander." Cory Goodman is handling script writng duties.
Film blog Screen Rant speculated that with the given production date, it would be more likely that the finished product will arrive to the cinemas "late summer in 2016."
