Bear Attack In Alaska: Statistics Make It Improbable, Still Happened – Beware

Bear Attack In Alaska - On Tuesday, the Coast Guard aided and rescued a 65 year-old man who got attacked by at least 3 bears.

The attack took place in Sally Island, Alaska, KTLA reported. It was stated that the island was a remote one and the hunter wasn't alone.

According to NY Daily News, the name of the injured hunter is Michael Snowden and he was hunting along with Jeff Ostrin, a 38 year-old man. Apparently, the attack took place while they were having lunch.

The pair hunted a deer and both of them were dragging the carcass of the animal through the woods. At a point, they decided to take a lunch break and stopped at a spot.

While they were doing this, they head rusting behind them. What appeared before them was a female bear, and she was travelling with at least two cubs. It seems that the female bear though, was the direct perpetrator of the attack.

She "charged at Snowden and bit his leg." In reaction to the attack, Ostrin helped his partner by shooting and killing the bear. He also killed one of the cubs, which was 2 or 3 years old, because it lunged out as well.

After this, the Coast Guard of District 17 came to their aid and rescued the injured man. They also made a statement on the matter.

"These hunters were extremely prepared for the environment and circumstances they found themselves in. The fact that there were five bears was an abnormality and this serves as a reminder that anything can happen and we need to be aware of our surroundings."

It was stated before that the bear attacks against humans are extremely rare. When bears approach humans, it's due to food sources. Not in the sense that humans would become the source of food, though.

What happens a lot is that bears look for leftovers, trash, etc. Anything they can feed on. Still, "eating" a live human being is in effect, rare. It was stated before that a bear ate a man, but he was already dead.

And when bears attack humans, it's to protect their cubs. For instance, here the female bear was accompanied by at least two cubs and according to the Coast Guard, they were in total five bears, actually.

The most probable is that the female bear found the humans as a menace to her cubs and not because she saw the hunters as a food source. Yet, the Coast Guard is right about keeping an eye either way. We never know what might happen.
