The FDA and UBC Food Distributors in Michigan have announced a recall of Baraka Brand 7-ounce ground black pepper containers due to potential contamination with Salmonella. Samples of the black pepper tested positive for the bacteria during a routine check by the New York Department of Agriculture and Markets. Production has been suspended while the FDA and the company continue to investigate the source of the problem. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with the product. 

Salmonella: What You Need to Know

Salmonella is a type of bacteria that can cause serious illness, especially for vulnerable populations like young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of Salmonella infection typically include fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare cases, it can lead to more severe complications, such as arterial infections, endocarditis, and arthritis.

Identifying the Recalled Baraka Black Pepper 

The recall specifically targets 7-ounce Baraka Brand ground black pepper packaged in clear plastic containers. These containers have an expiration date of January 2026 printed on the back of the label and a UPC code of 8 22514 26626 6.

What to Do if You Have Recalled Black Pepper 

If you have a container of Baraka Brand black pepper that matches this description, do not use it! It's crucial to take the following steps:

- Discard the recalled pepper immediately.
- Start a return process at the store where you purchased it for a full refund.
- Wash your hands thoroughly with warm, soapy water for at least 20 seconds after handling the recalled product or any surfaces it may have touched.
- Disinfect any surfaces or containers that may have come into contact with the recalled pepper using a sanitizing solution.
