From Racetrack to Bar Cart

The Mint Julep's connection to the Kentucky Derby is undeniable. Legend has it that the traditional silver julep cups they are served in were first used at the Derby in the 1920s, and the tradition of frosty glasses brimming with this minty bourbon concoction has stuck around ever since.

  1. Muddle those mint leaves and the simple syrup in the cup you are serving it in.

Here are some ideas to inspire your inner mixologist:

  • Muddle in some fresh berries like strawberries, raspberries, or blackberries for a burst of summer sweetness.
  • Feeling adventurous? Add a muddled fresh jalapeno slice for some heat.
  • Add a splash of peach schnapps or muddle in a fresh, ripe peach slice for some real Southern vibes.
  • Lastly, a zhuzh of lemon or lime will really bring out the mint flavors and give you that cool, frosty tang.
