Although she did all the decision-making, the 51-year-old actress gives credit to her son Louis for starting the idea of adopting a baby sister for him.
“Louis spearheaded this whole journey,” Sandra revealed to People magazine’s cover story. “I did remind him that it could be either a brother or a sister and that we would be so lucky to have either one. He did specify that he wanted a sibling who has some brown skin.”
Three years ago, when the topic arose at a dinner with friends, Louis made his feelings clear.
"He puts his hands behind his head and leans back and says, 'I don't have daughters,' " Bullock recalled. "And we agreed as well that he didn't have daughters, and then he said, 'but I'm gonna have a baby soon. I don't know its name yet, but it's coming.' "
Sandra spilled in a new, heartfelt interview on December 2 that she wasn’t totally confident in herself that she could love another child as much as her son Louis.
“I was so scared that I couldn’t love another child as much as I love Louis, that I didn’t deserve to bring another child into my home,” Sandra confessed in an exclusive interview with People magazine.
“And then Laila arrived. Not only did I grow another heart instantly, but I fell in love with Louis even more. They were meant to be together. It’s like they have always been together.”
Despite the magazine spread, Bullock said her main aim was to protect her daughter from the prying eye of the public and the media.
Bullock said she hopes her daughter's adoption will help shine a light on the hundreds of thousands of children currently in foster care.
