On Tuesday, the American guitarist, singer and composer who is famous as the former guitarist of the rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers - John Frusciante, released new music on Bandcamp and Soundcloud.
John Frusciante, who recorded five studio albums with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, made it known on his official website via a letter detailing the reason why he chose to make the new tracks available for free. John Frusciante also wrote about his thought on the "audience."
TheGuitarist Frusciante wrote, "Even when you make music purely for the sake of doing it, as I do, it sometimes helps to have friends whose ears and taste you have in the back of your head when you're making it, but this way around can also put you in a straightjacket, just as aiming your music for the masses can. Therefore, in January 2014, I made up my mind to stop having an 'audience' in this sense."
John Frusciante went on to make it clear that "reduced to a single sentence, it would have been accurate to say that, at this point, I have no particular audience in mind while I am making music." Having this way gives me a certain freedom and stimulates growth and change. It is a state of mind that has been extremely useful to me from time to time throughout these last 27 years of being a professional musician."
But just because the former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist doesn't have people specifically in mind when he's recording, it doesn't mean that John Frusciante doesn't want individuals to listen to it.
John Frusciante said that providing people music for free online is so common nowadays, it serves as a good reminder for everyone that artistic expression is always a matter of giving, not selling. Frusciante also said that selling is the part to make money, and the artistic expression and creation is the giving part. He added that it is his pleasure to give people his music.
