Charlie Sheen took the headlines by storm after publicly announcing on Today at NBC that he is HIV positive.
"I am here to admit that I am in fact HIV positive and I have to put a stop to this onslaught, this barrage of attacks, of sub-truths - very harmful ... stories that are threatening the health of so many others," [The Guardian]
As per NBC, Sheen may be HIV positive, but it didn't stop him prom ,making out with numerous partners. Upon doing so however, Sheen seem positive that he didn't infect his partners as he was taking a pill that could prevent his HIV from spreading.
CDC Director Dr. Tom Frieden stated that the drug however could not be easily accessed by everybody.
"PrEP isn't reaching many people who could benefit from it, and many providers remain unaware of its promise, with about 40,000 HIV infections newly diagnosed each year in the U.S., we need to use all available prevention strategies."
Dr. Robert Huizenga, Sheen's doctor, knows about the pill the whole time to which he prescribed it to most of Sheen's sexual partners.
"In numerous situations he would inform his partner and then he would often have the partner see me and we would have an incredibly frank discussion about their exact risks based on their known information and their options,"
Amanda Bruce on the other hand, Sheen's former girlfriend was able to take PrEP. She was aware that the pill reduced the risk of infection by 90 percent.
During her interview with NBC news Bruce openly shared that PrEP is "pretty cool".
"I did not know about a prophylactic medication that you could take as an HIV-negative person, It's pretty cool.",
Bruce then added that unprotected sex was never an option for her as she was always careful when it comes to making out with Sheen.
"That option of being unprotected was not even an option for me, once we became a couple, I decided not to use them any longer. That became another discussion. If you happen to fall in love with someone, as I did, who happened to be HIV positive, you can be intimate. You can have children. You can have a normal life,"
