'LUPUS': An Autoimmune Disease that Can Ruin A Girl's Life

Lupus is one of the most deadly diseases that is often responsible in ruining a girl's life. It is often neglected and taken for granted as patients who suffer from the disease would look normal as in nothing is wrong with them. The disease can also disguise itself as a normal illness such as anemia, arthritis, stress, or even just over fatigue. As per Medial Daily, it is called as 'the great imitator' as its symptoms would often mimic other illnesses which make it hard for physicians to detect the disease.

As per the Everyday Health website, Lupus has the capability to affect numerous parts of the body including the skin, joints, and even the kidney. It is known for its unpredictability, it is an 'autoimmune' disease in which the body's antibodies attack the normal cells treating them as if it's a foreign invader.

Dr Doruk Erkan, MD, who is a scientist at the Barbara Volcker Center of Woman and Rheumatic Diseases at the Hospital for Special Surgery and associate professor of medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City stated that each lupus patient is different.

"Complications from lupus can occur in any of the organs that lupus commonly attacks. However, the most commonly involved organs are the skin, joints, and kidneys. Some of the lupus manifestations, such as kidney, brain, or heart involvement, can cause serious long-term complications."

During her interview with Medical Daily, Sarah Stothers, RN from the Lupus Foundation of America, Lupus can be very tricky.

"Some people look completely normal yet they feel awful, the smallest task is impossible." The disease is often isolating, because you look so normal on the outside, and that's probably the biggest thing: 'But you look completely fine!'

She then gave out the basic symptoms of the illness such as extreme tiredness, headaches, swollen joints, fever, sun sensitivity are the most common symptoms.
