Overwatch finally has a release date. In a post on the game's official battle.net page, developer Blizzard has revealed that the highly anticipated multiplayer shooter will be coming on or before June 21, 2016.
The bigger news however, is the confirmation of a console release. The announcement reveals that Playstation 4 and Xbox One editions of the game will be releasing as well. Fans who pre-order the title will receive a special skin for Widowmaker, one of the game's playable heroes.
The news ends speculation on Blizzard's possible pricing scheme for the title. Prior to the reveal, fans were debating how the company would opt to monetize the title. Some believed that the game may go the free-to-play route or adopt a model similar to other shooters like Counter Strike: Global Offensive.
Game Informer says that Overwatch will be $59.99 on all platforms and urged fans to tune into Blizzcon tomorrow for further updates. A blizzard spokesperson said:
"We are excited to share more information about Overwatch with everyone at BlizzCon this weekend - so be sure to tune in to the opening ceremonies for free at www.BlizzCon.com. We'll have more information tomorrow during the presentation, which is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. Pacific / 2 p.m. Eastern."
The game is currently in the midst of closed beta test on PC. The title is Blizzard's first new franchise in over 20 years and their maiden voyage into the realm of first person shooters.
The game is a 6v6 multiplayer shooter that takes cues from the MOBA genre. It features a diverse roster of different heroes each with their own unique combat style and skill set.
It's been receiving some good feedback so far. Whether or not the recently revealed pricing model has a negative impact on the game remains to be seen.
