‘Star Trek’ Series: After 2009 Reboot, CBS Launching On Demand All Access TV Show, Will Kirk Or Picard Return?

It's been ten years since the end of the last "Star Trek" series, a phenomenon that has returned to television due to popular demand for nearly five decades (the original show starring William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy will turn 50 next year), and now CBS announced that they're boldly going where many have already gone before.

This new CBS venture would be the seventh "Star Trek" series after the original 60s one, a short-lived animated series from the 70s, the late 80s and early 90s classic show "The Next Generation" starring Patrick Stewart, follow-up "Deep Space Nine," the Kate Mulgrow-led "Voyager" and prequel "Enterprise," which ran from 2001 to 2005.

According to The Guardian, the upcoming "Star Trek" series will air in January 2017 and it will be helmed by Alex Kurtzman, who co-wrote the first two reboot films, namely the 2009 "Star Trek" and its 2013 sequel "Star Trek: Into Darkness."

Vulture reports that the way this new "Star Trek" series is being released is a major switch from tradition, as it will catch up with current times by releasing it live on CBS' All Access service, their own Netflix-like subscription site, which currently has only one big dish, "Big Brother."

According to Vox, the move to launch the new series through the network streaming service seems like a safe bet to boost it, starting out big with one of the most profitable franchises owned by CBS.

CBS' press release on the new "Star Trek" series says that the show will bring new characters to the large franchise, as it "will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966."
