White Strawberries that Taste like Pineapple? Get to Know Pineberries

Ever heard of white strawberries? Most people might react and think that these are not naturally grown or maybe it's an artificial fruit. Many reactions can be expected but according to an article in Upvoted, they are not unripe or albino strawberries, they are actually called pineberries. These are white or colorless strawberries that have a similar taste with pineapple.

Reddit user Crustyjaj introduced what seems to be a strange fruit to everyone. The Today I Learned community said that there is a fruit that is a strawberry but taste like pineapple and it is called Pineberry. The existence of this fruit might be described as out of this world, however the origin seems to be true and earthly.

NPR's Sasa Woodruff said that the pineberry was first discovered in Europe in 1750. They classified it as a cross between the American wild strawberry and Chilean strawberry. In 2003, Hans de Jongh, a Dutch strawberry breeder helped cultivate it and made it a stronger and productive plant. He began a very busy career taking care of the pineberries. While he was busy doing this, consumer interest on exotic fruits grows and true enough the pineberry became a novelty fruit. This fruit has initially been reported by the British Food Fad in 2010. The berries are one of the many varieties of white strawberries. Some of it came naturally but most of it is results of cross-breeding. The distinct pineapple taste of these berries is what sets them apart.

Some people might be interested to grow them in their own gardens. Good news for people living in the US, you can now order the seeds of this unique fruit from Nourse Farms, Burpee, Amazon, and maybe even a local farm near you.

What are you waiting for? Run to your local farm store and start your own pineberry garden.
