Hipsters Beware, Man Bun is Causing Baldness According to Specialists

Man bun or top knot phenomenon is still on-going and it turns out that the style du jour can be making men go bald according to specialists.

As reported in Unilad, hipsters are warned that this hairstyle may be enjoyed for a short time and long term use can cause baldness.  According to a health specialist, the tension on hair follicles caused by pulling the hair tight in making a top knot can cause traction alopecia.

Traction alopecia is a condition that causes acute bald patches around the forehead and temples is a direct result of hairstyles that pull the hair over long periods of time.  This obviously doesn't sit well with image conscious individuals.  This revelation definitely sent shockwaves to East London when reports came out.

Dermatologists Sabra Sullivan said that, "It's really, really common.  I see it probably once or twice a week".

Sullivan added that this hairstyle, man bun and top knot, can lead to irreversible follicle death and permanent scarring.  "They're putting traction on the hair follicles that the hair is not really meant to take.  Traction alopecia in men is becoming more common".  She recognized that this hairstyle is partly to blame.

In a report posted by Independent UK, Dr. Albert H. Slepyan has written about this phenomenon 60 years ago.

"In spite of the repeated admonitions, the pony tail in recent years has enjoyed unusual fascination and popularity among our younger females."

"It is clear that those who wear the pony tail longer and more tightly drawn are considered more accomplished in the eyes of their contemporaries. It is the prolonged pulling of the hair backward and upward into a smoothly compacted corded hair bundle that has caused loss of hair in many of these persons."

Meanwhile this condition isn't specific to male alone.  Overly tight hair pulling can cause this baldness regardless of gender.  High end stylist at New York's Donsuki Salon, Dennis Zuniga, said, "Once you damage the hair follicle, it will not grow back."

This might be the time to let your hair down and let go of the man bun or top knot style.  What do you think? Share your thoughts with us.
