It seems like the reboot of 'The X-Files' is still a few months away, but several fans are already broken-hearted from the news that the Fox Mulder and Dana Scully team has officially broken up.
Entertainment Weekly had previously reported that Mulder and Scully will no longer be working together in 'The X-Files' reboot, which is set to air on Fox on January 24.
Show creator Chris Carter has finally spoken up about the Mulder and Scully split, confirming that it will happen in the 'X-Files' revival.
"We do it in an interesting way," Carter told The Hollywood Reporter. "We play with that relationship [in the event series]. We put some of the tension back in that was relieved by them being together. It added to the storytelling opportunities."
So whose idea was it to break up the Mulder and Scully team? Chris Carter takes full responsibility.
"It's something that I came up with; I had been thinking about it," he said. "There was always talk of [breaking them up] if we did another movie."
David Duchovny, who plays Fox Mulder in the series, addressed the break-up during the Wizard World Comic-Con in Pittsburgh.
"In the beginning of these six episodes, we seem to be estranged," Duchovny said about the Mulder and Scully's relationship in the 'X-Files' revival. "I don't know where it's going. I really don't know. I'm trying to think [what was] the end of the sixth episode ... It's yet to be determined."
Chris Carter also admitted that working on the first six episodes had been exhausting.
"I honestly don't know how we did it," he said. "I was exhausted by the end of these six episodes. I think what the show benefited from a lot of youthful energy. I always say about the show that we didn't know what we couldn't do, so we just tried everything. And luckily, we had the people working with us, and for us, that always gave it a shot."
