Although whales are known for being shy yet intelligent animals, there is one particular whale that stands out as a rather vengeful creature in popular culture: Moby-Dick. The whale in Herman Melville's book has terrified readers for years, and now the whale that inspired the story will find his way into movie theaters.
The film 'In the Heart of the Sea' is based on Nathaniel Philbrick's best-selling novel that tells the true story behind 'Moby-Dick.' The new trailer offers more glimpses at 'Thor' star Chris Hemsworth as first mate Owen Chase and the new Spider-man Tom Holland as the cabin boy Thomas Nickerson. It also shows a clearer look at the sperm whale that has been called a "demon."
An excerpt of the official synopsis for the film reads as follows:
"In the winter of 1820, the New England whaling ship Essex was assaulted by something no one could believe: a whale of mammoth size and will, and an almost human sense of vengeance."
"'In the Heart of the Sea' reveals the encounter's harrowing aftermath, as the ship's surviving crew is pushed to their limits and forced to do the unthinkable to stay alive."
The trailer dwells on the battle between the Essex crew and the powerful sperm whale, which appears to be determined to sink their ship and kill all its passengers. However, what viewers may not be fully aware of is the horror that occurs when the men are stranded in an island.
The film also features 'Peaky Blinders' star Cillian Murphy, Benjamin Walker from 'Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter' and Ben Whishaw as 'Moby-Dick' author Herman Melville. Michelle Fairley, who is best known for playing Catelyn Stark in 'Game of Thrones,' also makes an appearance while 'Fear The Walking Dead' star Frank Dillane will portray Owen Coffin.
'In the Heart of the Sea' is scheduled for release on December 11, 2015.
