Australian actress Rebel Wilson is under fire in Twitter after she joked about police brutality at the MTV Video Music Awards on Monday.
The Pitch Perfect 2 actress was slammed and accused of trivialising the Black Lives Matter campaign after she joke about police strippers while presenting the award for the best hip-hop video during the night.
She came out of the stage wearing a full police officer costume and started talking about people ang their problems with the police. As the skit went on, it was more about strippers than the men in uniform.
During her appearance at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles, she joked, "A lot of people have problems with the police."
The 35 year old actress continued, "But I really hate police strippers." Then she took off her cop uniform revealing her shirt that reads "F- Tha Stripper Police."
She said, "You guys know what I'm talking about. They come to your house, you think you're getting arrested, and you just get a lap dance that is usually uninspired."
"I hired a police stripper for my grandmother's 80th, and he wouldn't even feel her up. Well I paid an extra $100 for her to get an erotic back massage, but it only lasted one song. I hate this injustice. Hence the shirt."
But the Black Lives Matter activists didn't buy the skit. The whole poking joke disappointed the group.
"We The Protesters" activist DeRay Mckesson tweeted: "@RebelWilson/@MTV, police violence isn't a joke, as the deaths of #TamirRice, #RekiaBoyd, #FreddieGray, #MikeBrown, & #MyaHall remind us. If the police kill someone you love, would it be a funny joke, then?"
Many people presumed that her joke is about the ongoing accusations of police brutality towards African-Americans, according to The Sydney Morning Herald.
One angry fan wrote, "I bet you wouldn't make a joke about white boys who shoot up movie theatre or schools to introduce the best Country video."
Rebel has yet to comment on the Twitter backlash over her police stripper joke.
