Ever since one of the many Sony Pictures leaks revealed there may be plans for Idris Elba as James Bond once Daniel Craig's stint in the iconic role is over, rumors that the "Luther" actor might be taking the role have swirled all over the Internet, to many fans' approval - but it seems there's one person who's not comfortable with the idea.
Anthony Harowitz, an English writer who specializes in mystery and suspense and has recently been chosen to write a 007 book for the Ian Fleming estate, was recently questioned about the possibility of Idris Elba as James Bond, and his comments angered many over racist undertones.
The issue started when The Daily Mail interviewed Harowitz recently, as he spoke about his own 007 book, "Trigger Mortis," set to be a sequel to beloved classic "Goldfinger," and he was then asked what he thought about those Idris Elba James Bond rumors, to which he said the actor was "too rough" and "too street" for Bond, and ultimately not "suave" enough.
Of course, considering the possible Idris Elba casting has been getting fans excited for months, the comments didn't bode well; even though Harowitz specified it wasn't "a color issue," many took offense about Elba's race, and Wired reports that "Idris Elba" quickly became a trending topic on Twitter, as well as the hashtag #TooStreet, with many basically saying the London-born actor is as suave as it gets.
BBC reports that, following the outrage about his Idris Elba James Bond comments, author Harowitz quickly released a statement to apologize about his poor choice of words.
"I'm really sorry my comments about Idris Elba have caused offence," said the author. "Clumsily, I chose the word 'street' as Elba's gritty portrayal of DCI John Luther was in my mind but I admit it was a poor choice of word. I am mortified to have caused offence."
However much many would love to see Idris Elba as James Bond, from the actor's own words, it seems unlikely he'll be cast in the role.
