Facebook has just topped 1 billion users in a single day. Earlier today, company founder Mark Zuckerberg announced that 1 in 7 people on the planet were logged into the social media site this past Monday.
'On Monday, 1 in 7 people on Earth used Facebook to connect with their friends and family.
When we talk about our financials, we use average numbers, but this is different. This was the first time we reached this milestone, and it's just the beginning of connecting the whole world.'
Said Zuckerberg in his announcement. He also shared a short video to commemorate the achievement.
This is certainly an impressive milestone for the service. The BBC notes that back in October 2012, the company boasted of garnering at least a billion users a month. Now that figure is being eclipsed daily.
'A more open and connected world is a better world. It brings stronger relationships with those you love, a stronger economy with more opportunities, and a stronger society that reflects all of our values.' Said Zuckerberg as he closed his post.
The company has continually found ways to spread its service despite saturating itself in most parts of the world. Through innovations like their free internet service Internet.org, they've managed to connect many of the world's inhabitants.
Earlier this month we reported on the Aquila, Facebook's prototype drone project that can beam down internet connectivity to the most remote parts of the world.
During Aquila's unveiling Zuckerberg said, 'This effort is important because 10% of the world's population lives in areas without existing internet infrastructure. To affordably connect everyone, we need to build completely new technologies.'
The company's sister service Instagram also had a huge announcement today as they revealed a host of new photo sharing features.
