Meteorologists are calling Hurricane Sandy the Frankenstorm 2012, because of the timing around Halloween and the combination of the storm and two cold fronts from the north, which can create a path for a "perfect storm".
Because of the cold fronts, Sandy is expected to turn into the northeast. It is expected to make landfall near the Delaware coast, where it will collide with the cold fronts, creating nearly 12 inches of rain and up to 24 inches of snow.
Sandy has already caused over 40 deaths in the Caribbean, and can cause more than $15 billion in damages in the US.
Warnings have already been issued and major power outages are expected. Last year, Hurricane Irene left 6 million homes without electricity. Sandy could cause more power outages than that.
"When you're facing 50-60-mile winds with all the leaves still on the trees and a soaking rain for a long period of time, we're going to see trees come [down]," said Ralph LaRossa, PSE&G President.
Airlines have issued statements to expect cancellations. The MTA in New York City has said a shutdown is unlikely. Atlantic City casinos have made contingency plans to close, while Jersey Shore towns began voluntary evacuations.
