The American stand-up comedian, writer, actress, and producer Amy Schumer teams up with New York senator Charles Schumer, to instigate a plan to tighten the control of weapons to criminals and people with mental illness. On Monday, Amy and Senator Schumer held a news conference in New York, and announced the proposal drafted by the senator.
Both Amy and Senator Schumer wanted to push for a new anti-gun violence legislation, after last month's incident of a man who opened fire in Lafayette, Louisiana, minutes after the showing of the romantic comedy Trainwreck. The gunman with a history of mental illness, killed Jillian Johnson, age 33, and Mayci Breaux, age 21, and injured nine others.
New York Senator Charles Schumer (Amy Schumer's cousin) said, "These shootings have got to stop. I don't know how else to say it." The legislation reportedly involves a "three-part plan" that "would reward states that submit comprehensive records into background check systems with funding and penalize the ones that do not."
Amy Schumer said she was deeply affected by the shooting incident in the movie theater, her sentiments are shared by comedian Caleb Medley.
Amy Schumer stated during a press conference in New York, "When I heard about this news, I was completely devastated ... then I was angry," Amy Schumer also said, "My heart goes out to Jillian and Mayci, to the survivors, to the families and everyone who is tied to the tragic, senseless and horrifying actions of this man who shouldn't have been able to put his hands on a gun in the first place."
U.S. States that fail to submit relevant records into background check system, will be punished with New York Senator Charles Schumer's proposed legislation. Senator Charles Schumer also asks U.S. Congress to maintain the funding for mental health and drug abuse programs.
Senator Charles Schumer also stated, "Having people like Amy speaking out reaches people who I could never reach," the senator also said, "It's going to make a big difference."
