Recalls Issued for Salmonella in Peanut Butter, E. Coli in Ground Beef, and Listeria in Romaine Lettuce

Recalls have been issued for Salmonella in peanut butter produced by Sunland Inc. and sold at Trader Joe's, E. coli in ground beef produced by XL Foods Inc., and Listeria in romaine lettuce by Fresh Express Inc.

Salmonella in Peanut Butter

A peanut butter recall has been issued for 76 products, including peanut butter and almond butter under Trader Joe's store brand and other brands.

Recently 29 salmonella cases have been reported in 18 states, with four hospitalized and no deaths. Half of these cases occurred among children under 7. An investigation by the Center for Disease Control suspect that these salmonella poisoning resulted from peanut butter sold at Trader Joe's stores. Of 14 people interviewed, 12 reported that they ate Trader Joe's Creamy Salted Valencia Peanut Butter before they got sick. See here for the list of peanut butter products being recalled.

E. Coli in Ground Beef

The Food Safety and Inspection Services has confirmed E. coli in a sample of raw boneless beef trim by XL Foods Inc. imported from Canada to the U.S. The meat was distributed to California, Michigan, Nebraska, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wisconsin at retailers including Food4Less FoodsCo., Kroger, Safeway and Jay C.

Albertsons issued a voluntary recall on several ground beef products in its Oregon, Washington, and Idaho stores due to E. coli contamination risks. It is following a recall by XL Foods Inc. for ground beef products.

No illnesses have been reported.

The recall includes the products made within September 3-21.

Listeria in Romaine Lettuce

Fresh Express Incorporated is recalling 9 oz Leafy Green Romaine Salad after the USDA found Listeria monocytogenes in a random sample. The use by date was for September 16, which means it most likely is no longer on shelves or in refrigerators.

-Distribution: Primarily Midwest and Eastern states of the U.S.
