The internet has gone crazy after youtuber styropyro showcased his latest creation on his channel yesterday. The contraption which he dubs, the laser shotgun, looks like something straight out of a science fiction movie or video game. The video has already garnered 3 million views since it debuted yesterday.
The device is made up of eight 5W laser arrays and a heat sink strapped to a plastic toy gun and powered by a series of battery packs. Using a magnifying glass to amplify the beam, the home made device is capable of outputting 40W of laser energy.
In the video Styropyro showcases his creation's destructive power, incinerating items like balloons, sheets of paper, and chunks of wood like they were nothing.
To get an idea of just how powerful this laser shotgun is, check out what Gizmodo had to say: "the most powerful laser you can buy off the shelf is 0.005 watts; the US Navy's prototype laser cannon, powered by a warship and capable of shooting down drones, is 30,000 watts."
To those unfamiliar with Styropyro here is a little background courtesy of his official website:
"My name is Drake Anthony, and I am 22 years old. I am currently studying at Southern Illinois University, where I am triple majoring in chemistry, physics and math. I am most known for my "DIY Laser Guy" YouTube series, where I have gotten 55 million video views since I started posting in late 2006. I have had so much fun posting videos, and will continue to do so in the future!"
As his bio states, this isn't the first time one of Anthony's creations has caught the attention of the internet. He previously gained the attention of Youtube when he posted a video of a homemade lightsaber. He has also created drone operated laser gun and host of other laser related gadgets all available for viewing on his youtube channel.
