Martin Sheen Speaks Up About Son Charlie Sheen's Public Meltdown in 2011

In an interview with Radio Times published last Monday, Martin Sheen finally spoke about feeling helpless during son Charlie Sheen's public meltdown way back 2011.

We remember Charlie Sheen in 2011, going through rough times in court with Denise Richards and Brooke Mueller over the custody of his five children. Admittedly, the Two and a Half Men star found cure through his addictions. After his shocking revelation, Charlie made public attacks against the Two and a Half Men creator Chuck Lorre and CBS that led him being fired from the series.

Charlie's father, Martin Sheen, admitted to Radio Times that he felt "powerless" and was left with no other options by to "pray for him and lift him up." Martin tried to be there for Charlie as much as he could. "You have to be aware of the circumstances. You have to be aware of many things that the public is not aware of", he confessed.

The 70-year old Sheen added only those personally close to Charlie "understood what was going on". Charlie was in a hopeless situation that time and used steroids for diversion. The Two and a Half Men star felt that the only way for him to stop his drug use was to go public. "And it was very painful. No less painful for him", Martin heartbreakingly expressed.

Father Sheen went through a similar fate as his son. Martin was a heavy alcoholic and even suffered a serious heart attack on the set of "Apocalypse Now" in 1977. Thereafter he remained sober for 30 years. His own experience helped him offer full support to his son.

Martin Sheen helped son Charlie deal with his fiasco by assuring his love for him. Giving up, "a measure of despair" as Martin describes it, was never an option. He just lifted everything his son was going through to a "higher power".

Sheen also discussed with Radio Times how happy he was working with Charlie on the FX show "Anger Management". Unfortunately, the show got pulled out too soon by the end of 2014.

Martin Sheen presently stars in a Netflix show "Grace and Frankie", penned by Marta Kaufman. He is joined by Jane Fonda, Sam Waterston and Lily Tomlin.
