Years back, when Heath Ledger was announced as The Joker in Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight," eyebrows were raised all over the world, but his performance (which reportedly was a primary responsible for his untimely death) gathered the Australian actor a posthumous Oscar; now, as "Suicide Squad" begins shooting, Jared Leto's Joker look is revealed for the first time, and reactions also vary.
In 2014, Leto won his first-ever Oscar for his portrayal of a troubled transsexual in "Dallas Buyers Club," and not long afterwards he was announced as Batman's arch-nemesis in "Suicide Squad," a comic book adaptation of a band of DC super-villain mercenaries, also starring Margot Robbie; and now, after months of expectancy and even a teaser pic featuring the "Requiem for a Dream" actor in a pose based on Alan Moore's "The Killing Joke," now Jared Leto's Joker look is out there for all the world to see.
According to Time Magazine, the official release of Jared Leto's Joker look happened as the people behind "Suicide Squad" celebrated the character, as the Batman villain turns 75 years old this week, as the first time he appeared on a DC Comics publication was in "Batman #1" on April 25, 1940.
As The Mirror reports, "Suicide Squad" director David Ayer took to his Twitter page to share Jared Leto's Joker look to the world, certainly riding on the recent trailer from another DC Comics cinematic universe adaptation, Zack Snyder's highly anticipated "Man of Steel" sequel, "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice."
Forbes reports that Jared Leto's Joker look is based on Frank Miller's views on the villain, though unlike any other live-action adaptation fans have ever seen; however, fans of the comic books might recognize the new look from Miller's controversial "All Star Batman & Robin" series, which also showed a heavily tattooed Joker that looked more like a hardened criminal and less like a misfit.
With only Jared Leto's Joker look to compare with, it's impossible to know whether the "Lord of War" actor will top Heath Ledger's portrayal of the character - but fans are definitely getting giddy!
