Floyd Mayweather Jr. finally shuts up all accusations that he is ducking the much anticipated fight against Manny Pacquiao. In an interview in San Antonio, when asked whether he wants to fight Manny or not he answered "We are ready. Let's make it happen. May 2. Mayweather versus Manny Pacquio. Let's do it."
This is of course a positive sign that he really wants the fight to happen. Boxing aficionados all around the globe has been on this bandwagon for years already. Right after Manny Pacquiao won his eighth division title, speculations has been circulating around the boxing world that the most appropriate match for him would be the pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Mayweather's interview last Friday night was his first statement directly declaring his interest on the prospect of a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight. The fight has been on negotiations since 2009. A lot of negotiations went underway but none ever came to fruition. The most noteworthy of these negotiations was the one that happened in the late 2009 up until the early months of 2010. Both camps have agreed on a deal unfortunately it was easily thawed by a disagreement on drug-testing protocols.
It is important to note as well that Mayweather has been pointing Bob Arum as the main perpetrator why the fight cannot happen. Pacquiao is under contract with Bob Arum's Top Rank promotion and is fighting under the HBO banner, Mayweather on the other hand is fighting under Showtime. A negotiation about an HBO-Showtime co-production is currently undergoing, and if it will be fruitful this will be the second time both companies will be promoting the same fight. The first time happened last 2002 in a heavyweight championship match between Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson. Lewis was with HBO while Tyson was with Showtime when the fight happened.
Floyd Mayweather Jr. still is undefeated in all his 47 fights, knocking out 26 of his opponents. Manny Pacquiao, who recently dropped Chris Algieri six times in one bout, holds a record of 57 wins 38 of those coming by way of knockout, five loses and two draws. Pacquiao also holds the record of winning championship titles in eight different weight divisions.
