Guillermo Del Toro Talks About Working On 'Silent Hills' With Junji Ito And Hideo Kojima [VIDEO]

Fans of Guillermo del Toro were understandably devastated when 'Silent Hills' was cancelled. The video game had marked the collaboration between the 'Crimson Peak' director, 'Metal Gear Solid' creator Hideo Kojima and manga artist Junji Ito, who del Toro thinks very highly of.

"Ito is completely one of the masters," del Toro told IGN, adding to compare the artist to himself and other horror greats.

"I like people that get high on their own supply. I get high on my own supply, I'm like Scarface at the end of the movie. I don't have an objective distance, I'm not post-modern, and I think Ito is the same way. Like, in the way that you feel Dario Argento in the early movies was getting off on each murder, or you feel David Cronenberg sort of secretly getting aroused by body horror. In the same way, you feel Junji Ito being tittillated at a very basic disturbing level by his stuff," he said.

Guillermo del Toro also pointed out how Junji Ito's manga works are the products of Japanese culture.

"I think that the Japanese horror manga normally is really ferocious. It's truly unbridled and it's brutal because, I guess, the society is so regimented that it's a perfect escape. And Ito has a lot of the molasses and the morale to boost of the Japanese society. He articulates them through pure horror."

'Silent Hills' may have already collapsed, but Guillermo del Toro had expressed an interest in working with Hideo Kojima again in the future. Although he's also happy just keeping in touch with the genius.

"Work or not, I consider Kojima a master. I had the good fortune of having some sort of friendship or relationship," del Toro said. "For me, the interest is just to interact with like-minded people, whether it's on Twitter or in real life, it's great. The fact that he can show me stuff that he's been working on and I can show him stuff I'm working on, it's enough."

'Silent Hills' featured the voice of 'The Walking Dead' star Norman Reedus and was poised to become the ninth installment in the 'Silent Hill' game series before Konami announced its cancellation.
