Samsung Galaxy A8: Company Reveals 5.9mm-Thin Smartphone

Samsung has revealed the Galaxy A8, the company's thinnest smartphone in the market with a thickness of only 5.9 mm. The new release is 85% thinner than the 7.1 mm Galaxy S6 Edge and its predecessor Galaxy A7, which is 6.3 mm thick.

The design did not limit the engineers who were able to fit a high performance 3,050mAh battery along with a 16-megapixel camera. The new model has a display measure of 5.7 inches 1080p HD, bigger than the A7 and S6 Edge.

Despite the slimness, the Galaxy A8 weighs heavier at 151 grams compared to the A7 which is only 141 grams.

Samsung addressed the consumers' need for devices that can get through the day by using a thicker than usual battery but has a better life span compared to others available in the market.

The latest Galaxy A8 contains a Qualcomm-made 64-bit Snapdragon 615 chipset which includes an Andreno 405 graphics processing unit along with a 2GB of internal memory. Reports reveal that the new model includes a fingerprint scanner.

Consumers can purchase the smartphone in two different variants of storage, the 16GB and a 32GB model. It will be running on the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop operating system and is believed to support the upcoming Android M.

Samsung Galaxy A8 will also have a premium design and metal body similar to the S6 and S6 Edge.

The smartphone maker has started launching its latest product in China at around $515 which is cheaper than the S series. Consumers in the region can pre-order the device but Samsung has not yet revealed the official release date in other countries.

The company has not yet confirmed if the A8 will be sold in the US. Sadly, a spokeswoman informed BBC that the product will not be coming to the UK.

The thinnest phone title does not belong to the Samsung Galaxy A8 but to the Vivo X5 Max and Oppo R5. But the latest smartphone from Samsung is still slimmer than Apple's iPhone 6.
