Samsung Disables Microsoft’s Windows Update In Devices

Multinational electronics company Samsung was discovered to be deactivating certain Windows Updates in some of its computer products.

Microsoft MVP Patrick Barker was assisting a user who was having problems with his device, when he found a program called Disable_Windowsupdate.exe in the SW Update tool. This stops Windows Updates from automatically running in the background, causing various vulnerabilities.

Users who have this installed will also have to look for the latest software updates manually.

Microsoft was dismayed by the actions of the South Korean-based company. The Windows Update works as the delivery tool for important system and security updates, so disabling it is not advisable.

Contrary to the allegations of Microsoft, Samsung has defended its update tool, stating that it does an important task.

"You can install relevant software for your computer easier and faster using SW Update. The SW Update program helps you install and update your software and driver easily," defended the company.

Samsung clarified that their systems are not blocking any Windows updates on their computer products. The company itself is committed to providing customer satisfaction and what they do is give the users options on the actions they want to their computers to do.

As a developer, they treat security matters as a priority.

Barker answered back by explaining that the discovered program was designed to run automatically without considering the setup of Windows. To verify, he and his team even downloaded and installed the aforementioned app which is a signed property of Samsung.

Besides security updates, Windows Update is also in charge of the software, drivers and operating system updates which are essential to every computer.

Microsoft is now coordinating with Samsung so they can resolve the issue together.
