New Research Shows High-Fat Diet Can Fight Brain-Ageing

High-Fat Diet- A new research shows that consuming foods high in fats can postpone brain damaging effects.

A Danish research from Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at University of Copenhagen suggests that a high-fat diet can delay signs of ageing in brain functions. The study is a joint venture done by the National Institute of Health and the Center for Healthy Ageing in the University of Copenhagen.

Eating a well balanced diet is crucial in attaining overall health. But a new study published in the Cell Metabolism scientific journal shows that consuming a high-fat diet is beneficial because it can hinder brain-ageing development. The study opens the possible cures to people suffering from Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease.

The research is also seeing a possible cure to the Cockayne syndrome, where children prematurely age and die at 10-12 years.

The team of researchers used mice that have DNA-related defects. During the study, those mice consumed nothing but a high-fat diet. Results suggest that high-fat diet can delay brain defects.

Added to the result, the team has also found out that medium chain fatty acids such as coconut oil could bring positive effect to the mice with damaged DNA's.

"A high-fat diet also seems to postpone the aging of the brain. The findings therefore potentially imply that patients with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease in the long term may benefit from the new knowledge," Vilhelm Bohr, Head of the research said.

As people get older, the brain function starts to diminish due to the damaged DNA's. When people's intellectual capacity is affected, diseases such as Alzheimer's, Dementia and Parkinsons start to develop.

According to Alzheimer's Association, Alzheimer's is affecting over 5 million people in the United States. It is the 6th leading cause of death in the U.S.

Alzheimer's disease is the most ordinary type of dementia that leads to death of the neurons. The condition makes one incapable to do even the daily activities such as swallowing, walking and talking.

Dementia the more general type affects the overall memory and thinking capacity. A person with dementia will forget how to write or even compute.

The result of the study claims that high-fat diet or consuming foods high in medium chain fatty acids such as coconut can alleviate the condition of people suffering from early brain-ageing. By eating diets high in fat, the brain cells have extra strength to repair the damage caused by defective DNA's.New Research Shows High-Fat Diet Can Fight Brain-Ageing
