Swedish Search for Sub: Sweden Widens Search for Suspected Russian Submarine, What Mission Does Submarine Hides Underneath?

Swedish search for sub continues around waters off Stockholm. Massive search started Friday by ships, helicopters, divers, pilots and sailors in the Baltic Sea for what is believed to be a Russian submarine hiding in the Swedish waters and was not detected since the cold war era.

In an order by the Swedish navy, civilians were asked to leave areas spanning from Nattaro Island to Danziger Gatt. According to BBC, a Swedish source relayed that an underwater ship was seen in waters nearly 25 km. (16 miles) from Stockholm.

With the Swedish search for sub, Russia's defense ministry strongly denied the allegations stating that they were not involved to any emergency situations that made use of Russian warships. The ministry also stated a Dutch vessel may have activated Sweden's alert following their exercise mission in the area.

"It could be a submarine, or a smaller submarine," Swedish Rear Adm. Anders Grenstad told reporters. "It could be divers using some form of moped-like underwater vehicle and it could be divers that don't have any business on our territory."

Sweden didn't confirm any foreign country it suspects. However, countries surrounding the Baltic Sea are being watch out for as the Swedish search for sub continues on the fourth day. The whole Swedish team are guarding on smaller underwater craft or foreign submarine that officials claimed have penetrated Swedish waters unlawfully.

Swedish military showed a photo of what seem to be a vessel enclosed with white ripples, Reuters states. Swedish search for sub was reportedly confirmed when the ship then immersed to waters. The reports released by officials were said to be reliable.

When Grenstad was asked why an underwater vessel will be interested to enter the Swedish waters, "It's always about testing the Swedish response to see if we are awake and able to detect it... it's a way of testing our skills in detecting and locating," Grenstad said.

Swedish search for sub could take longer as reports confirmed that the search area has spread out to include more islands out into the Baltic beyond Stockholm.
