GMO Free Foods - One recurring subject these days is GMO Food and whether or not is safe to consume it, if it represents any threat to health and now, if it should be labelled. In Colorado, there is a specific group dedicating to this issue: Right To Know Colorado.
First of all, what is GMO? Many people might ignore this. GMO stands for Genetically Modified Organism, which means that the product is modified from the very beginning, as it happens with corn, soy, etc.
The thing that many people ignore too is that GMOs have been in food for a long time. Most food that is sold in aisles in supermarkets is GMO and people still consume it. As a matter of fact, scientists have investigated many times the effects and they have found no harm to health whatsoever.
Still, in Colorado and Oregon, voters want companies to label the GMO products and state in them that they are GMO, so people will know for certain what they are buying.
Larry Cooper, from Right To Know Colorado has said, and WebMd noted, "Why isn't this labelled in the ingredients already? Why wouldn't they (certain food companies) want to label GMOs? I just don't understand that. What are these companies hiding? Why do they want to leave me in the dark and not let me know what I'm eating?"
And there is an answer provided by Martina Newell-McGloughlin who is a professor of biotechnology at the University of California and is working for a No to the 105 group and Right To Know Colorado.
She says that if companies have to separate products by labelling them with GMO information and by states, then they will increase prices on $400 for a family's income and most people don't want to have that sort of increase in taxes.
She also provides the option for people who don't want GMOs and instead, prefer GMO free food to simply buy organic food which is the most well-known option. Out of these arguments, a 'food fight' might be coming due to the GMO labelling.
