Imagine a real life Chocolate Factory ala Willy Wonka but instead of chocolate, you have cakes, candies and other assorted sweets and surely, you will have mental diabetes. But what if you are told that it is for real?
Buzzfeed reports that an installation has been set up in Think Tank Gallery, one of downtown Los Angeles' most prominent art galleries, that is full of cake and other confections. When we say full of cake, we mean 7,000 square feet of cake from the floor to the ceiling.
According to Free Books Zone, the biggest difference between the exhibit and Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory though are that the cakes and sweets in the exhibit are not edible. The materials used to substitute real confections were wood and mixed acrylic media with fake fruit and Swarovski rhinestone detailing.
Known as "Break Bread L.A.," the art installation was conceptualized by the duo of Keith Magruder and Banksy collaborator Scott Hove. Hove's previous work with Banksy, 2015's "Dismaland," also had similar elements that are both creepy and beautiful.
In a video interview, Hove described the process he underwent in creating the several pieces used in the installation.
"To contrast that 'bougie' cake look, I collect items that have an inherent violence, but beauty at the same time," he said. "That's why I choose things like switchblades, wolf jaws, and leopard jaws. Even though they are plastic, they possess a real fierce quality that affects us on a very deep level."
Visitors will be able to take a tour around the many cake chambers and mirror mazes of Break Bread L.A. during the day. For evenings, the space occupied by the art installation will play host to ticketed events.
The space was opened to the public in Feb. 13 and will be in the gallery until March 12.
