Food Safety: Salmonella Found in Flax Seeds and Chia in Canada

Health Matters America of Cheektowaga, New York, last Saturday recalled specific lots of organic traditionally sprouted flax seed powder and organic traditionally sprouted chia and flax seed powder as they have been found to be potentially contaminated with Salmonella, a pathogen that is a threat to human health.

Notably, random samples of the recalled products were taken by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) from retail stores in Canada and were tested positive for Salmonella contamination, according to Food Safety News.

The list of recalled products includes the following.

Organic traditions Sprouted Flax Seed Powder, NET WT. 8 oz./227g; UPC barcode 854260006261; Lots AHM626151103 Exp. 09/2017, AHM626151229 Exp.10/2017 (lot number located near UPC barcode on back of bag)

Organic traditions Sprouted Chia and Flax Seed Powder, NET WT. 8 oz./227g; UPC barcode 854260006216; Lots AHM621151217 Exp. 10/2017; AHM621151229 Exp. 10/2017 (lot number located near UPC barcode on back of bag)

Organic traditions Sprouted Chia and Flax Seed Powder, NET WT. 16oz./454g bag, UPC barcode 854260005479; Lot AHM547151217 Exp. 10/2017 (lot number located near UPC barcode on back of bag)

Consequently, the supplier, Health Matters America Inc., was notified by CFIA, who ceased packaging and distribution of the affected lots.

In the meantime, the CFIA, US FDA and Health Matters America are continuing their investigation into the matter and how the food was affected, according to reports from The Morning Call.

Incidentally, the organic traditions sprouted Chia Seed Powder and organic tradition sprouted chia and flax seed powder were distributed nationwide in flexible plastic bags.

Although no health issues have been reported with the lot, yet Salmonella is an organism, which is known to cause fatal infections in young children, chronically ill and elderly people.

Patients infected with Salmonella often experience high fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting tendency, and abdominal pain.
