Beware of These Toxic Self-Help Quotes

When a looped sequence is applied to the  mind, this creates an opening of that mind to the vehicle to accept what it will deliver. This principle is closely related to hypnosis and applies to any repetitive stimulus to which the mind is exposed. Mantras and repetitive recitations operate under this principle.

The vulnerability of the mind under this state cannot be emphasised enough. Yet, humans are constantly subjected to looped stimuli - advertisements, songs, GIFs, memes and what not.

Equally dangerous, or perhaps even more dangerous, are the thoughts humans feed their consciousness. The effects of these may be such that they pervade conscious day-to-day actions and decisions.

The crux lies in thoughts that feed toxicity and misrepresentations to the mind. To try and achieve a genuine understanding of what the mind is being exposed to is a very effective way to protect it from damage and misdirection.

Bustle's compilation of self-help mantras that may damage rather than help an individual provides a really good view of these:

#1 "You Have To Love Yourself Before Anyone Else Can Love You"

Rather than a focus on what blocks an individual's capability for empathy and a sense of confidence, the focus is more on the pressure of self-acceptance to earn validation and affection from others. This takes away from the unconditional nature of love.

#2 "Real Women Have Curves/Fat/Flaws/Anything"

Discounting the condescension in such a statement, these words from Alysse Dalessandro of Bustle provide the best counterbalance: "All women are real." This is true with or without the stereotypes, the flaws and the fats. To counter a misconception with another misconception is just as disastrous and damaging to genuine self-perception.

#3 "Smiling Looks Good On You"

Sure, when individuals take a break from self-involvement for the sake of helping others and of easing their discomfort or pain is a wonderful thing to do. However, to habitually cover up internal ordeals and turbulence for the sake of making others feel good and assured is not always a healthy thing.
