Nicki Minaj Performs in Angola Amid Human Rights Crisis Controversy

Rapper and songwriter Nicki Minaj went on to stage her scheduled performance in Angola amid being caught in controversy after a human rights organization protested to cancel her show over the country's poor human rights record, The Independent reports Monday.

The 33-year-old rapper and songwriter frontacted a festival on Saturday night in Angola. The event which was sponsored by Unitel, an entertainment and communications company reportedly owned by the family of Angolan president Jose Eduardo Dos Santos.

Albeit the call she received from the Human Rights Foundation before her show which urged her to cancel her scheduled appearance on the grounds of the "human rights crisis in Angola", Minaj still managed to get a rally of support from her fans and this evident in her video footages capturing her arrival at the airport. With that, her trip for the most part was well received.

Minaj, who seem to have enjoyed her visit posted pictures and videos to her social media accounts documenting her trip to the African country. Minaj thanked the country's warm welcome while draped in Angolan flag.

The VMA-winning rapper and songwriter also posted a photo of her on Instagram alongside the president's daughter, Isabel Dos Santos who reportedly owns 25 percent of family-owned company Unitel.

Minaj captioned the said photo on her Instagram account: "no big deal... she's just the 8th richest woman in the world."

According to a report, the Angolan human rights group outlined various limitations of freedoms in the country and pointed out the unjust detainment of journalists who have criticised the dictatorial regime of the Dos Santos family in an open letter. They also criticised the Dos Santos family's extreme wealth of about $3.5billion net worth in comparison to an average citizen in Angola who lives on roughly $2 per day.
