According to a new survey for teens, the use of marijuana is now more popular than cigarettes and alcohol drinks.
A new report showed that the current trend for teen drug use has been changed. It has been discovered that high school seniors are now fond of using marijuana than alcohol and cigarette.
Since 1975, researchers at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor have been conducting surveys concerning teens' use and attitude towards alcohol and drugs.
For this year, the study which was conducted by the help of National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), have surveyed 44,892 students in eight, 10th and 12th grades concerning their use of drugs. During the whole study, there were about 382 schools that participated nationwide.
The result showed that the use of drugs like cigarettes, alcohol, heroine, and prescription pain relievers have decreased greatly compared to last year. On the other hand, the use of marijuana among high school students remained constant.
In a statement, Dr. Nora D. Volkow explained that this year's survey has been shocking.
"These are some of the lowest numbers we have ever seen. Notable is cigarette smoking -- it is lower than we've ever seen it. Heroin is at the lowest it's ever been. For prescription opiates, it's the lowest we have ever seen. Overall this is very good news," the NIDA Director told CBS News. "
The study also suggests that the use of marijuana is now the new trend among teenagers. Recently, the use of marijuana in some states in the U.S. has been legalized. As what Krakwoker perceived, the use of marijuana of American teens will increase more in the following years.
Director Michael Botticelli of National Drug Control Policy Director stated that there are still works to be done in order to totally prevent the use of drugs by teens.
