Fitness Fanatic Bodybuilder Died From Cancer caused By 'Misusing' Steroids

A bodybuilder, Dean Wharmby, from Rochdale who eat junk food and drank eight cans of energy drink to gain weight, died of liver cancer, on July 19 caused by years of steroid abuse.

Wharmby had been battling cancer for five and a half years.

Dean Wharmby had a physique that was admirable to many. He was big and he was bulging, and that was exactly what he was looking for.

He was obsessed with getting bigger and ate a diet that consisted of 10,000 calories a day, many of which came from unhealthy foods like burger and pizza. Dean also drank 7 to 8 cans of energy drinks a day.

Wharmby has first developed health problems in 2010 when multiple tumours were found in his liver which was due to the misuse of anabolic steroids.

Speaking at his inquest, coroner Lisa Hashmi said that Dean’s death should act as a reminder to people of the dangers of using steroids.

She said: "I find on the balance of probabilities that in such a fit, health-conscious young man the most probable cause of his liver tumours was the misuse of anabolic steroids.

‘To my mind, there is a direct, causal link with Dean’s death.

Ms Hashmi added to the Manchester Evening News reports.: "I would urge all those using and abusing such drugs to reconsider their position and ask whether it is really worth it given the life-threatening risks."

Dean's partner Charlotte Rigby said that when she first met Dean years ago, she had suspicions Dean had used steroids because of his muscular build, but when they got together in 2010, Dean was trying to stop taking the drugs.

Wharmby had been a body builder for 20 years before he became ill and at his biggest, he weighed 20 stones.

In November, doctors told Dean that he had just three weeks to live as the tumour got too big to operate on.
