We're just a week away from seeing JJ Abrams take on the Star Wars universe in theaters. The director, along with Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy and screen writer Lawrence Kasdan, has been one of the main creative forces behind the first post-George Lucas movie in the franchise.
Following The Force Awakens, Abrams will pass the film making responsibilities over to Rian Johnson for Episode VIII and Colin Trevorrow for Episode IX. Though he won't be sitting in the director's chair for the next two installments, Abrams figures to be a key part of the Star Wars universe for years to come.
Speaking with Cinema Blend's Eric Eisenberg, Abrams elaborated on what exactly his role will be going forward.
"It will be really interesting as a fan of Star Wars to see the off-shoot movies, which I'm sure will be fantastic, and I know that there are amazing people working on them. So it will be fun to see how it all comes together." Said Abrams, who will stay on board as an Executive Producer for future films. He also added that he will serve as a creative consultant to the succeeding filmmakers, but admits he doesn't want to get in their way.
"My involvement is going to be as needed, but luckily with people like Rian Johnson working on these next movies, these are not filmmakers who need help so much as they just need to be given a chance to do their thing."
Abrams also told Cinema Blend that some of the groundwork he and Kasdan laid when conceptualizing the Force Awakens will definitely be present in the succeeding films.
To see it all come together, we'll have to wait until December 18 when The Force Awakens hits theatres.
