J.J. Abrams, who is the director and co-writer of the highly anticipated American epic space opera film Star Wars: The Force Awakens, said that director Ava DuVernay of 2014's historical drama film 'Selma' would "just kill it" if she will be in the director's chair for a 'Star Wars' film.
The American director, producer and writer - J.J. Abrams, was asked about potential female writers or directors he would choose to see working on a Star Wars feature, J.J. Abrams replied, "To me, the knee-jerk reaction if I had to name a director, will be Ava DuVernay, who I think would just kill it."
J.J. Abrams went on saying that Ava DuVernay is as much a fan of genre films and hearing Ava DuVernay discussed about, not just Star Wars, but hearing her speak about those types of movies, is evidence that she would just nail it.
J.J. Abrams stated that director Ava DuVernay's work in the motion picture Selma, that has come out in the last decade, was well told, sophisticated and humane. The Star Wars: The Force Awakens director said, that Ava DuVernay can do the Star Wars story that well, and there's no doubt that she'd ignite a Star Wars movie.
However, the current line-up of future directors of Star Wars film is all-male, Gareth Edwards (Rogue One, slated in 2016), Rian Johnson (The helmer for the as-yet untitled Episode VIII in 2017) and the American film director and screenwriter - Colin Trevorrow (The equally unnamed Episode IX which is slated for a 2019 release).
And the untitled Han Solo project, which is slated for 2018, was originally to be directed by the American film director, film producer and film editor - Josh Trank, before he left the project in April this year. Then, the team of Christopher Miller and Phil Lord replaced Josh Trank in July.
