The music industry has lost another tragic yet talented artist.
According to Billboard, former Stone Temple Pilots frontman died Scott Weiland early Friday morning. The Velvet Revolver singer was 48 years old.
The announcement was made via Scott Weiland's Facebook page.
"Scott Weiland, best known as the lead singer for Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver, passed away in his sleep while on a tour stop in Bloomington, Minnesota, with his band The Wildabouts. At this time we ask that the privacy of Scott's family be respected," the page wrote.
Scott Weiland rose to fame as the vocalist of Stone Temple Pilots, whose first album 'Core' was released in 1992. Their debut was a major hit with singles like 'Plush,' 'Creep' and 'Wicked Garden.' The group went on to release five more albums, although they went on hiatus several times. Scott Weiland officially left the band in 2013 and was replaced by Linkin Park frontman Chester Bennington.
In 2003, Scott Weiland joined the supergroup Velvet Revolver, which included former Guns N' Roses member Slash, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum as well as Wasted Youth guitarist Dave Kushner. However, the singer usually ended up disagreeing with the other band members and decided to leave in 2008.
It hasn't been an easy life for Scott Weiland, who was diagnosed with a bipolar disorder and had repeatedly been arrested for drug possession and DUI. The musician also had a tendency to relapse while in rehab and was seen as a volatile figure in rock music. However, this hasn't stopped his friends and fans from paying their respects for him on social media.
"Really sorry to hear about Scott Weiland," former Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic tweeted about the news, although ex-Third Eye Blind vocalist Stephan Jenkins summed up the loss perfectly. "#Scottweiland had a rock&roll heart which is a beautiful and dangerous thing.it's terrible he died so soon. My best to his family and mates," he tweeted.
